Pioneer Internal Blu-ray Disc/DVD/CD Writer BDR-206 (Black)

Great Drive, (What's this?) I kept putting off buying a Bluray drive, as I didn't trust them. But after upgrading my video editing computer, backing up footage to DVD was getting old. After buying the Pioneer BDR-206 and two Verbatim 97344 25 GB 6x Blu-ray Single-Layer Recordable Disc BD-R LTH (Low to High), 20-Disc Spindle, I was ready to go.

I had already upgraded the firmware on the BDR-206 to version 1.05, which is as simple as downloading the firmware updater from the Pioneer web site, and double clicking on it. The new firmware version makes the drive compatible with LTH disks. I have since burned 9 disks, all of them at 6x, and have not burned a single coaster.

I'm very happy with this drive and would recommend it to others.
Worked great for less than ten months., (What's this?) I bought this drive back in January and have burned less than 100 dvd's/bluray disks in the span of about nine months. Now the disc tray refuses to eject. I've checked for discs stuck in the drive and can only eject it using a paper clip or something of similar size. I'll update this review once I hear from Pioneer support.

Edit: Pioneer support got back to me fairly quickly.
Perfect for my needs!, (What's this?) This Blu-Ray burner wrote out 200 GBs of data in about five hours, including the data verification. I used the Verbatim Blu-Ray dual layer 50 GB disks, but only had about 44 GB available on each. Still, I was quite pleased with the performance.
pioneer bdr 206 does not work, (What's this?)
Excellent piece of equipement, (What's this?) This unit will burn anything you throw at it, it's very reliable and fast. An excellent burner for your money, you wont go wrong with this one.
AThe BD that will burn on any media, (What's this?) A++++ burns great bd50 bd25s and works with almost every bluray recordable i threw in there. Make sure once u get the unit to do the firmware update so the unit is more compatible with other discs.
Quiet and Fast, (What's this?) These drives are awesome. I bought a pair of them to swap out a pair of LG standard DVD drives in my Dell XPS PC. While I can burn CD's and standard DVD's in iTunes effortlessly, iTunes does not support Blu-ray at this time. On the other hand, Windows 7 loves the Blu-ray discs and burns to and reads from effortlessly. I couldn't get Windows Media Player to playback purchased Blu-ray movies, and did find a Cyberlink product that does the job. Overall I really like Pioneer products.
Not always Mac Compatible, Kind of works, sometimes. There are many complaints about this drive. Incompatibility with sleep and Lion. Mine does not get recognized using an enclosure with an eSata port and is somehow locked to 1x burn speed. I have firmware 1.05 installed and it doesn't help. Skip this and get the OWC recommended Blu Ray burner.
Very slow, This was a great drive for several months, then it became extremely slow, and only reads at the 2x speed at best. Meanwhile, my much older Pioneer BDR-205, the model before this one, keeps performing wonders.

My advice, forget this model, get the 205.
If you use a Mac Pro ------Do not Buy, (What's this?) This drive is the most incompatible drive with any Mac Pro computer. I installed it on a 2008 Mac Pro and the drive always seemed to go missing. I thought it may have been my computer so I just sat on it for a bit. Two weeks later my Mac died, so I bought a new Mac Pro with 8 cores and figured the issue would go away. Surprise surprise....it still exist and nobody seems to have a solution.
